When you have young guests coming over for parties, thinking about what food to fill those tiny bellies can be a challenge. More so if they are picky eaters, or if they are already more interested in playing than eating.
Here are some easy finger food that are easy to prepare and if a sure fire hit with the kids.
Breaded Chicken Strips
INGREDIENTS
- 1 1⁄4 cups panko
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3⁄4 teaspoon salt
- fresh ground black pepper (fresh makes a difference)
- 1 cup corn starch, for dredging (approximate)
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 4(4 -6 ounce) boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips (or fingers or tenders)
- 1⁄2 cup oil, for shallow frying
I don’t always cook with a recipe, so this is my take on this recipe. If you have stale dry bread left in the fridge you can always make your own breadcrumbs of course, just toast them already cut into cubes and blitz them in the processor. This portion serves 2-4 adults, which should be plenty for the little kiddos.
But if you’re expecting a big group you can always double this portion. I like how the kids and easily help themselves with these. They are boneless and makes an awesome finger food for both your young guests and their parents
Put the flour, eggs and the bread crumbs each separately in 3 shallow dishes. Pat the chicken dry and season both sides with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Dip each breast into the flour, then shake off the excess. Next, run the breast through the egg to coat it lightly and finally, lay the strips in the bread crumbs, turn it over and press into the breading to coat. Pan fry in the oil until golden brown.
Rainbow Fruit Skewers
This recipe makes 12 skewers and is zero cooking. All you need are bamboo skewers and you can even switch up the fruits with local fruits or whatever that is in season.
12 raspberries
6 orange segments (from 1 large orange), cut in half
12 1″ chunks of pineapple
1 large kiwi, peeled and cut into 12 1″ chunks
24 large blueberries
12 red seedless grapes*
Lay out 12 bamboo skewers. Prepare your fruit. Slide a raspberry to the top of the stick, next add chunks of orange, pineapple, kiwi, 2 blueberries, and a grape. Repeat for each skewer. They aren’t exactly finger food, but the bright colours are very eye catching, besides, who doesn’t like to eat off skewer stick?
Pisang Goreng Chocolate Cheese
This Pisang Goreng Chocolate Cheese is picking up in the Klang Valley as of late. A mix of savoury and sweet, on a pool of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup and shredded cheese, it’s no wonder people are going nuts over these. I would suggest cutting them into smaller bite size if you’re serving this as finger food to the kids, they can be quite messy to eat after all.
This recipe from FriedChillies serves 3-4
4 – 5 Bananas, the ‘Nangka’ variety because they hold up better when it comes to frying
1 cup flour (you can also use a premix version)
1/4 cup cornstarch
Pinch of salt
Pinch of sugar
Some water
1/2 block processed Cheddar cheese
1/2 block dark chocolate or some chocolate sauce
Honey, as you want
Oil for frying
Make a smooth batter by mixing the flour, cornstarch, sugar and salt together with water. It shouldn’t be too thick. Rest the batter for 5 minutes in the fridge. Meanwhile heat up enough oil to deep fry.
Peel the bananas and slice length ways. Dip the bananas in the batter and fry 2 – 3 at a time, in batches. Fry for 5 – 6 minutes until golden brown. Take out and drain on paper towels.
While hot, sprinkle grated cheese, grate some dark chocolate or drizzle chocolate sauce, and drizzle some honey on top. Serve!
