Risks of Circumcision.

Generally in Malaysia, circumcision is performed for cultural and/or religious reasons. Other times it could be for hygiene and medical purposes. Male circumcision is a surgical procedure which involves the removal of the foreskin of the penis.

Risks of Circumcision: Circumcision for Muslims

As mentioned in the hadith (a collection of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), circumcision is a sign of fitrah, a natural inclination of humans, along with other fitrah such as the clipping of nails, removal of hair on the armpits and genitals, and trimming of the moustache. Therefore it is compulsory and a rite of passage for every Muslim.

A very common and relatively simple surgical procedure, it can be performed using a number of methods:

  • Conventional method
  • Clamp technique
  • Sutureless
  • Laser

Risks of Circumcision: Botched Surgery

But sometimes a simple surgical procedure could go wrong. A 10 year old boy nearly lost part of his penis when it was severed during a routine laser circumcision at a clinic in Kajang recently. The procedure was performed using a laser scalpel by a doctor who has 21 years of experience and is a graduate from the University of Karachi in Pakistan.

The boy was rushed to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM), which then referred him to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for surgery to reattach the head of his penis.

Choose Wisely

Sometimes eager parents just want to complete the ritual and may end up overlooking venue choices to have their children circumcised.

As parents, always make a point to do your homework. Do not choose sub-optimal and non-conducive venues that is not in a clinic or hospital setting. There is still risk of infection, especially if the equipment used were not properly sterialised. Be sure to engage services from clinics registered with the Health Ministry, to reduce risk of malpractice.

Adults may overlook the procedure as a simple surgery, but circumcision is an important and probably traumatic surgery for a child. So do consider safety issues rather than cost when planning your child’s circumcision. A botched surgery is still not worth the risk and could scar your child for life.
