In an article by CNN travel, Kuala Lumpur was ranked the fourth best shopping city in the world, beating cities such as Paris, Hong Kong and Dubai.

Malaysia has some of the biggest malls in the world. With three Malaysian malls making the top 10 list of the largest malls in the world (1Utama, Mid Valley Megamall and Berjaya Times Square).

The article specifically mentioned 1Utama, which is the world’s fourth largest shopping mall.

“With more than 650 shops, Asia’s largest indoor rock climbing facility, massive rooftop garden with 500 species of exotic plants and indoor rainforest with koi ponds and freshwater aquarium,” writes CNN travel writer Violet Kim.

Cities were judged in four categories using a one-to-10 scale for each category.

1. Getting around: Quality of public transportation, affordability and availability of cabs.

2. Value: Bargain opportunities, such as sale seasons and average prices.

3. Variety: Number of available brands, range of shopping categories, quantity of upscale shops, department stores, boutique and vintage retailers and market stalls.

4. Experience: City beauty, quality of window displays and shop décor, friendliness and competence of clerks and service staff, dining and accommodation options.

Expert advice was also given by fashion merchandising firm Donegar Creative Services and Marie Bergfelt as well as the senior spokesperson for Global Blue who publishes the ‘Globe Shopper City Index’.

KL reached a total score of 30 points out of the possible 40. The article states that “KL’s impressive score comes from its winning combination of high quality shopping, affordable prices and reliable sales, which can stretch for several months”.
