Relationship communication can be a tricky thing. At one time or another, everyone has said the wrong thing at the wrong time. But you can’t go wrong with these 10 things that all mums need to hear every now and then.

1. Thank you

Mothers do so much around the house, and often get taken for granted. Let your wife know how much you value and appreciate her. A heartfelt thanks can go a long way.

2. You’re a great mother

All mums, no matter how capable or confident they seem, worry about how being a good mum. The standards for dads, on the other hand, aren’t as high—why do you think society vilifies mums for the smallest errors while praising dads for just parenting? Affirm your wife’s parenting skills and stand up for her when she faces unfair criticism.

3. You’re beautiful

It’s hard to maintain a healthy self-image after pregnancy has wrecked your body and you’re spending most of your day running after your kids. It’s your job to remind your wife how beautiful she is, stretch marks and all.

4. Let’s go on a date

Just because you’ve been together for years doesn’t mean that you should let the romance fade. Ask her out on a date, dress up, hold her hand, and just make an effort—it’ll make a world of a difference in keeping your marriage alive.

5. I’m here for you, no matter what

Mothers, especially stay-at-home moms, often feel isolated and alone. Be there for her and support her by checking up on her throughout the day and letting her know that she can lean on you when she needs to.

6. I’m listening

Ask her about her day, her thoughts, how her family’s doing, anything she feels like sharing with you. And actually listen—that part’s crucial.

7. How can I help you?

Your wife probably has her hands full with the kids and keeping the house together, especially if you don’t have any househelp. Remember that dads are parents too, and that you should also do your part at home.

8. How can our marriage improve?

A marriage needs work and open communication, and by intentionally sitting down to talk about how your relationship can improve, you will probably end up doing just that.
