This year has been an insanely difficult year for many parents. We have never spent more time at home with the kids than we have this year. So this review is going to be a little different than others. It isn't just going to be me telling you what a great product this is - it is also going to be me being really honest about why I think we need certain things in our lives as parents to make it easier.
This year, my son turned one and on his birthday, we discovered that he had allergies. He is allergic to mushrooms. He is allergic to eggs. And worse still, he is also allergic to the two dogs we have at home.
Pet dander has never really been an issue... but with the MCO and CMCO in place, taking the dogs out for their regular grooming sessions have proven to be impossible sometimes. It wasn't that the shops were not open, but between juggling our full-time work-from-home jobs now and the needs of a one-year-old, grooming sessions took a backseat.
We did not think that this would end up becoming a problem for our growing toddler. So when the opportunity came up to review the Philips Air Purifier Series 3000i, I thought, why not? Let's give a try.
Philips Air Purifier Series 3000i Review
Now, having mentioned that we have to juggle our full-time jobs and the baby at home; when the air purifier arrived, I have to admit, I was wary of having to set it up.
I was not looking forward to unboxing a million parts and having to put them all together by reading the manual.
But the first pleasant surprise that greeted me was the simple packaging and minimal "unboxing" effort required. I opened the box and the air purifier was already fully assembled.
All I had to do was remove the plastic packaging and untwist the wire that held the cord together.
There was also a yellow warning label sticking out the side of the filter, so I pulled that open and saw that the filter was still wrapped in plastic. It was very easy to remove as well and that's it!
After that, I plugged it into the wall socket and it was ready to use. I did all this in under 5 minutes.
Keeping updated with WiFi connectivity
After that, I downloaded the Philips Clean Home+ app on my phone and paired it with the device by keying in my home WiFi password. The whole onboarding process was easy and done in under 2 minutes.
From the app, I could see my baby's room air quality through the indoor allergen index. There are many things that can be considered allergens. But since I knew pet dander is one of my child's allergies and the dogs have just been in the room, I could only assume that the allergens in the room at the time were pet dander and possibly, dust.
I started running the air purifier around 9:24AM and at the time, the app showed me that the indoor allergen index was at 4 and the PM2.5 µg/m3 was at 15, which is a "Fair" level of air quality. (PM2.5 µg/m3 is the concentration of an air pollutant (eg. ozone) given in micrograms (one-millionth of a gram) per cubic meter.)
I closed the room door, turned on the AC to prepare my baby for his morning nap and let the air purifier continue running. At this point though, I turned off the lights on the air purifier, so as to not disturb my baby's sleep.
About 4 minutes later I checked the app again at 9:28AM and the indoor allergen index dropped to 2 with a PM2.5 µg/m3 of 7, showing a "Good" level of air quality in the room.
An hour and a half later at 10:58AM, I checked the air quality of my baby's room while he slept soundly and it showed me the indoor allergen index and the PM2.5 µg/m3 had dropped to 1.
Making this COVID situation a little better
Considering us parents already have so many things to stress and worry about, it was a relief to see my baby's room air quality improve so much with the air purifier.
He had a more restful nap that morning with cleaner air and I did not have to worry about him having any difficulty breathing. I also worry less about letting my dogs go into his room to play with him (because he really does love them so much!).
Though most of us are stuck at home during this pandemic, it's the little things like this that we can shrug off our shoulders that make the burden easier to carry.
The Philips Air Purifier Series 3000i is priced at RM1,999, which is a little on the high side, but for its features and specifications, we think it's a price worth paying.
