Baby Saybie, born weighing just 245g, is believed to be the world’s smallest premature baby. This little one, who was born in December 2018, and weighed only as much as a large apple, is finally going home, after spending the last 5 months in hospital.

She now weighs 2.54kg.

World’s smallest premature baby was size of apple at birth

Saybie’s mother had given birth to her by emergency C-section, after she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure.

When Saybie was born, just 23 weeks and three days into her mum’s pregnancy, doctors told her parents that she had just hours to live.

Her mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has described the birth as the “scariest day of my life”.

“I kept telling them, ‘She’s not going to survive. She’s – I’m only 23 weeks [pregnant]’,” she said in a video for Sharp HealthCare.

“Doctors told my husband that we had about an hour with her and that she was going to pass away.”

She is considered to be a micro preemie, because she was born before 28 weeks’ gestation. Amazingly, she did not suffer from serious complications after birth, like brain bleeds, and heart and lung issues.
