For many, it’s one of the most exciting moments of a pregnancy. It is also the one thing everyone else wants to know: The sex of the baby.
And while its practical to have this information in hand, some parents do decide to go against the grain, deciding NOT to find out the baby’s sex. Here’s why they made this decision:
It will be a surprise!
In our busy life we are frequently overloaded with information. And real surprises are few and far between- so some parents who value the feeling of anticipation choose not to find out.
“It’s a girl!”
That feeling of anticipation plus getting to live the whole Hollywood movie “It’s a girl!” moment is something some mothers want. And because they are so excited to find out the sex of the baby, it may motivate mothers to push harder!
Reduces disappointment
If you feel very strongly that you want a baby of a certain gender, it may be disappointing to find out your baby’s sex in advance. Especially for parents who already have a few children of the same sex and are pushing for one that is different.
Scans may be wrong
Ultrasound scans are not a 100% accurate way to determine the sex of a baby. Imagine buying lots of ruffly clothes, painting everything pink and picking out the perfect feminine name for a baby who turns out to be a boy!
Avoid gender stereotyping
Once you announce the sex of your baby, everything will become gender-specific. But not everyone thinks that girls should wear all pink and boys should only play with cars and robots. It’s 2016, we shouldn’t have to force children into a box. And this can start from pregnancy.
No more insensitive gender comments
If you don’t find out the baby’s gender, you won’t have to announce it and put up with people’s sometimes insensitive comments.
“Oh it’s a boy? Are you disappointed, you wanted a girl right?”
“Wow another girl? Are you going to try for another boy after this?”
Pregnancy is hard enough without having to listen to people’s irritating opinions!
