It’s holiday season and the kids are all home from school! What better time to take a little staycation to spend some much needed quality time with the whole family?
We’ve written before on staycations, which are basically holidays taken in one’s home country rather than abroad. It’s friendly on the pocket, and a great chance to explore places in your very own country.
And you’ll soon realise that Malaysia is home to some really fantastic holiday places, like:
Children love theme parks, and Legoland is Malaysia’s biggest pride and joy in this aspect. Located south of Kuala Lumpur in Johor Bahru and across the causeway from Singapore, it’s worth the 5 hour drive with its water parks, roller coasters and Miniland. If you have a few days to burn, you could always head over to Puteri Harbour Theme Park as well which is home to Thomas & Hello Kitty Town. It’s total kid heaven!
This is a bustling city about 5-6 hours drive to the north of Kuala Lumpur, famous for fantastic hawker food and an eclectic mix of the old and new. Its a place where ancient temples and colonial mansions, meet modern shopping malls, artsy back streets and hipster cafes. As it is one of very few places in Malaysia to preserve all the history and architecture of the past, it is a great place to bring the kids for a fun experience while learning about Malaysia’s heritage.
If your children are a bit older and game for a bit more adventure, try the caves and rainforests of Sarawak. East Malaysia is home to some of the most diverse rainforests in the world and Sarawak is home to lots of unique wildlife and plants. You could explore the Mulu Caves, see the Orang Utans, trek through national parks; this is a great opportunity to get your kids away from the hustle and bustle of the city and just absorb the magnificence of nature.
To get some respite from the tropical heat, try Cameron Highlands for a relaxing getaway. The British recreated their English ideals on this hill station, so there are charming little Tudor style cottages for you to stay in, some complete with English gardens. You could bring the kids strawberry picking, hiking, visit the bee farm and the tea, vegetable and flower plantations or just kick back, relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air!
Last but not least, if you’re pressed for time there is always Sunway Lagoon located in Petaling Jaya, just a stone’s throw from Kuala Lumpur. It’s a big theme park that boasts 5 parks in one, including a water park, wildlife park and even a “horror” park.
For the holiday season this year, they have introduced a new Nickelodeon themed park so your kids will definitely be spoilt for choice. Plus, Sunway is really a tiny city unto itself, with a hotel and shopping mall located right next to the theme park for ultimate convenience.
We hope you have some fun staycations this holiday!
