Read our reasons why your kid shouldn’t be watching PSY’s new music video, Gentleman.
“I-I-I I’m a, I-I-I I’m a
I-I-I I’m a, mother-father-gentleman
Gonna make you sweat
Gonna make you wet
You know who I am, wet PSY”
The above is a snippet of lyrics from PSY’s latest single Gentleman. The crude lyrics and video has garnered some mixed reviews among audiences. Making parents question whether it’s suitable for younger PSY fans to watch.
PSY’s rise to fame
PSY, the unlikely star rose to fame overnight when Gangnam Style went on to become the first YouTube video to reach a billion views. By the end of 2012, it topped the music charts of more than 30 countries.
As fans all around the world savour his new hit single, Gentleman, we review the lyrics and the video for PSY’s much younger fans –KIDS!
Let’s diagnose the ‘Gentleman’ music video for all its objectionable features which cuts it for inappropriate family viewing:
Tabooed title
The title of the single, Mother, Father, Gentleman, when repeated over and over again sounds like something very bad. Even adults don’t say it, especially in the presence of kids.
Stale acts
What viewers found disappointing were that some scenes, which were supposed to be hilarious, were not that funny at all, but rather stale. The scene in which PSY breaks wind into his cupped hand and drops it in an unsuspecting female’s face is rather senseless.
Demeaning
He taunts at the weaker section of society that is old men and makes sexual remarks at women. Though it is fun for him, it is still rather offensive.
Kids may be influenced by some of the unsavoury pranks that appear on the video such as the scene where there’s a man traveling on the lift with PSY. The man is clearly in need of using the loo but PSY deliberately delays the man’s journey up the elevator by pressing all the floor’s buttons.
Moves and lyrics
Though catchy, the words and acts all combined are suggestive and sexual in nature. Kids enjoy the music so they will end up mumbling the lyrics of the song. What do you think of your kids belting out lyrics like ‘Gonna make you sweat. Gonna make you wet’ or ‘Damn girl! You’re so freakin sexy’.

Sweet revenge
If you are a tit for tat kind of person you will always get what you want. The girl wins the guy by plotting the same things that he did to others. Like pulling the chair when he is about to sit.
So being revengeful is better than being forgiving and forgetting? It may not exactly be a great lesson our little ones ought to learn from a video.

How you can control the impact of inappropriate viewing on kids?
1. Parents cannot control the media, that is why it is imperative that we arm kids with discernment – the emotional tool that helps a person to decide good from bad and right from wrong.
2. We understand that it’s hard to teach your child that, ‘What you see may not be always right’. Mummies and daddies should guide your kid to judge things for themselves and not let outside elements manipulate them into thinking that it’s no big deal.
